Two tough training chiefs go out to dinner. One says to the other, How do you like your firefighters? Well seasoned. was the reply. (Insert drum sting here.) While this metal contraption looks like a giant smoker, it is actually a valuable tool that teaches firefighters how to recognize and manage a flash-over. A flash-over is when everything in the room becomes super-heated and with very little warning consumes the entire room and contents (including firefighters) with fire. This flash-over chamber exposes firefighters to those conditions safely so they can learn how to predict whats happening and how to prevent it from happening. Recently all of Fishers Firefighters completed their annual training in this chamber. In todays lightweight construction and materials used in room contents, flash-overs have become one of the most dangerous situations firefighters face today.
