Two years ago, while sitting in a Chicago hotel room, I was reading a pamphlet about a Masters Program in Seattle. I was in Chicago working on a Lay Leader Counseling Certificate through the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. One of the masters program tracts spoke about using art(s) as mediums. I thought I would see if I was interested in art, so I signed up for a painting class at the local college, Northeast Community College. My instructor, Michael Lynch, is incredibly gifted and I am blessed to have been able to glean his passion and eye for painting. I use oil on canvas, but am beginning to experiment with acrylic and different thinning/thickening agents with oil. I have begun to realize a passion I never realized I had and am pursuing art/beauty with that passion as my guide. I am also working on using painting as a medium to help others enter into their personal stories more freely than having to use the spoken word. As someone who, from the age of 3 onward, had to live through many forms of abuse and all the carnage and damage to ones self that rides along, it has been a long, long journey to begin to live and enjoy what is inside of myself and others. I would like to share that life, and call out life in others, through art. I believe every person has a gift(s), and that there is an artist in all of us. It may not be painting, but it is in being what brings beauty to your self, and the world around/far away from you. The journey that we take always has consequences, realized or not. The ripple we make by being alive can change everything in its wake for generations to come. That is way cool.
