Tyrell and Auntie Sweets- Short excerpt from Poetry The Novel Spook had her living like a queen. What you watchin Auntie?” “Honey, I’m watchin Good Times.” She took a drag from her cigarette and slowly blew the smoke out her mouth. “I heard you laughin from downstairs.” “Yeah. Baby, sometimes I forget how funny this show was. Me and yo granny used to watch this show all the time.” “I never seen it before.” She looked at me like I had just cussed her out. “Never?” “No ma’am.” She smiled. “Well baby, ima do you a favor and expose you to some good comedy. This show just came on a few minutes ago.” I sat and watched the show with Auntie Sweets. Every now and then, I would glance over at her carmel skin and get flashbacks of the times she used to let my cousins and I clean out her purse just so we could find the dollars of change she kept buried at the bottom of it. It was usually enough money to go to the penny candy store and walk out with a brown paper-bag full of cavities. Auntie Sweets treated all of her nieces and nephews like they were her own children. She was like a second grandmother to us; she spoiled us just as much as our own grannys did. It hurt me to see her crippled like she was, but she never complained about it. She just took the hand she was dealt and played it the best way she could. She would always say, “Sugar, I am ok. It’s always somebody else out there that got it worse off than you. Always. I just thank God for what I have, ya know. It could be worse sweetie. It could always be worse.” I focused my attention back onto the television. JJ just finished bragging to Michael about how he was the coolest guy in the ghetto. Auntie Sweets let out a subtle laugh before the show went to a commercial. She took another drag of her cigarette and blew the smoke out before she turned towards me. Her smile peaked through the smoke; the glimmer in her eyes was as bright as a full moon on a clear night. Baby, you know you still looking good.” She complemented me every time we saw each other, but I always smiled like it was the first time I ever heard her. “Thank you auntie.” “How miss Sherral doin?” I turned my head back towards the television. “Mama doin good. They’ve been talking about movin back to Texas real soon.” “Oh really?” “Yes ma’am. She said she likes it better down there.” “She should move back then. It aint too much a nothing goin on here in Milwaukee. What ol’ Darrell sayin about it?” “I don’t know. He thinkin about it. Thats all I can say.” She picked up a comb off her night-stand and ran the teeth through her hair a few times. Even though she knew she wasn’t going anywhere, she had to look her best. Auntie Sweets always looked her best. She put her comb down and looked back towards me, “Now how’s auntie’s baby doin?” I looked at her and smiled. The care in her voice was strong. “Im ok. Im getting ready to graduate this May.” Her smile lit up the room, “Really? I am so proud of you baby. You doin it honey, you doin it!” All I could do was smile. She kept talking, “It is so many young black men out here doing wrong and getting involved with the wrong things. Dying way before their time. I am just so glad that you decided to go another route and make something of your life. I adverted my eyes as she spoke, feeling conviction. She continued, It’s so easy to get off track and get involved with the wrong people, but I am SO happy that YOU are MUCH” she paused for a second to make sure I had her full attention, then she continued, “smarter than that.” She smiled at me, but unlike any other time; she didn’t show any of her teeth. It was a locked lipped smile. A smile that said, “you don’t think I know the trouble youre involved in, but I know.” ***AMAZON REVIEW*** I dont read books often, but this book took me to a whole new world!
