U.S. First Army and Civil Rights - A First Army military policeman stands by as federal marshals escort James Meredith on the University of Mississippi campus, October 2, 1962. The Kennedy administration sought to avoid military involvement in the desegregation of Ole Miss, but previous efforts to enroll Meredith with only the presence of U.S. marshals resulted in a riot. Reluctantly, the White House called in the Army to preserve order. Meredith would graduate and his son would also graduate from Ole Miss 40 years later as a PhD with high honors.
