U of G Podcast: The Guelph Lecture -- On Being Canadian Speakers to Discuss Challenges and Opportunities in Our Urban Spaces More than 80 per cent of Canadians live in cities today – a number that is expected to rise. Our growing cities present challenges and opportunities. Among the challenges: How to keep our roads, bridges, public transit and other infrastructure in working order? How to ensure equality among city dwellers? Among the opportunities: More and more, cities are “incubators” where innovation and creativity result from bodies and minds bumping up against each other. How we live in cities is the topic of this year’s Guelph Lecture – On Being Canadian, run by the Eramosa Institute. The event will take place this Friday, Jan. 9, 7 p.m., at the River Run Centre in Guelph. University of Toronto political scientist Janice Gross Stein and Toronto architect Brigitte Shim will talk about some of those challenges and opportunities. In this U of G podcast, they discuss some of their ideas. And University of Guelph president Franco Vaccarino weighs in with thoughts about Canada’s changing cityscapes and how academic institutions study and spark thinking about our urban environments. The University co-sponsors the event. The event will be moderated by Robert Enright, U of G research professor in art criticism. Also on the bill are musician Basia Bulat and writer Miriam Toews. Music for this podcast is It Wasn’t Easy from the album Bird City by Guelph artist Jenny Mitchell.
