#UAAU meets Parliament Leaders of Urban Authorities Association of Uganda is today meeting the parliamentary committee of public service and local government invites to voice the concerns of urban local government This is in regard to the ministerial policy statement presented by the ministry of local government and to generally bring issues of urban governance to the knowledge and consideration of parliament of Uganda. Lira Municipality mayor Morris Odung Omara who is also the Vice Chairperson UAAU is right now at parliament .In electronic communication to Qfm Editorial bureau this afternoon, Odung clarified that among the issues they are putting before parliament is the urgent need to increase the strategic staffing levels in local government to a general standing of atleast 75 percent in a bid to realize adequate manpower and improve service delivery. Odung says they will also push government to revise minimum wage, something that was last done in 1984 to provide a realistic living wage to various categories of workers like Doctors, Teachers, Lawyers, general civil servants and labourers generally. UAAU also wants government to improve on funding to local governments generally from the current 17 percent of the national budget to atleast 38 percent if at all service delivery in local governments is to match local demands for service delivery. The mayor also says they want government should consider giving the newly created 9 municipalities vehicles to ease administration, monitoring government programes and general service delivery. UAAU was established on 3rd July 1959 at the then town hall of Kampala Municipal Council with the objective of rendering advice and making representations to government on matters affecting urban local governments including matters of policies and legislation. Todate UAAU has a membership of 1 city, 22 municipalities,174 town councils and 200 town boards.
