UAE Troops Likely to be Trained by US Marine Corps The News International (Pakistan) (01/13/2014) The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified Congress of a United Arab Emirate (UAE) request to obtain counterterrorism training from the U.S. Marine Corps for members of its Presidential Guard Command. The training, which would cost the UAE $150 million, would also focus on counter-piracy, infrastructure protection, and national defense policy. If approved, the training would include logistical support for the Presidential Guard in addition to military exercises and equipment. Dr. Mustafa Alani, the director of national security and terrorism for the Gulf Research Center, commented on the deal, saying that it is particularly important for the UAE to protect its oil resources. He also points out that the training is in the interest of U.S. national security because the UAE provides an important force for stability in the Middle East. Dr. Anwar Eshki, a former army general and the head of the Middle East Center for Strategic and Legal Studies, agrees with U.S. support for UAE troops. He argues that UAE and U.S. forces can work together to fight terrorists, pirates and other threats.”
