UN Under-Secretary General visits Nigeria …To meet Jonathan, Sambo, others. The United Nations Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, Ms. Valerie Amos, will arrive in Nigeria today on a three-day official visit to the country on Thursday. Ms. Amos is the UN’s Emergency Relief Coordinator and Head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) is expected to provide humanitarian assistance to 500,000 of the 2012 flood affected people in the hard hit states. Recently, UN had approved the sum of USD$ 6.5 Million (about N1 billion) to support the country’s efforts towards addressing the humanitarian needs from the 2012 floods crisis in the country. While In the country, she is expected to meet with President Goodluck Jonathan and vice President Namadi Sambo. She will be discussing humanitarian challenges in Nigeria and also exploring opportunities to strengthen partnerships in addressing those challenges She is also expected to meet with the Foreign Affairs Minister, Amb. Olugbenga Ashiru; The Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo –Iweala and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Director General, Alhaji Muhammad Sani Sidi. The UN under Secretary is also expected to meet with the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Toga MacIntosh; Members of the diplomatic community / (African Business Roundtable), NGOs and other stakeholders. Before departing from the country on Saturday, Ms. Amos is expected to visit four states (Kogi, Delta, Bayelsa and Anambra) where she will meet the states’ governors and officials and visit some flood affected communities in the respective states.
