John Scott was one of those rare artistic spirits who let the sidewalks of New Orleans speak to his soul and imagination. Through his singular art, he has left us a visual and artistic legacy that will inspire us for generations. Scott studied art at Michigan State University and Xavier University of New Orleans, where he later taught art for over 40 years. Both born and raised in the segregated South, the couple struggled financially to pursue higher education and a better life for their family. Mr. Charleston was also a lifetime member of the NAACP and supporter of Southern Poverty Law center and The United Negro College Fund, and had a long and extensive career with the Department of Corrections in California retiring as Assistant Warden at Folsom State Prison. The Charlestons hard work and perseverance has given way for them to leave a part of their legacy to those who would otherwise be unable to pursue an education, because they believed that an education is paramount in ones journey through life.
