UNEARTHED THIS.... Death Hurries To The Poor And Tarries For The Rich By Prof. Antonio E. Casurao, Sr. They say that death is the great leveler, for rich and poor alike are not exempted when the angel of death knocks. Everyone, strong or weak, young or old, good or bad, succumbs to death when it comes. That is why the sentence, The woman dies after she served breakfast to President Obama. is politically and philosophically wrong. Because “dies” is a verb. Verbs are action. For the woman to die she should have had an active participation at her will to die. But as it is, the woman just gave up and die. Modesty aside, when death comes, we can do nothing but to surrender to it. It comes in many ways. But the most common is from severe illnesses. Today there are so many kinds of diseases that kill. But do you know that, “death hurries to the poor and tarries for the rich?” One of my wifes relatives has recently been diagnosed to have kidney failure at an advanced stage. She has actually been complaining its symptoms a long, long time ago. But hoping that the pain will just banish by lying, she did not go to the doctor for fear of expenses for the medicine and professional fees. Time came that she had to be rushed to the hospital at her request. That was the only time that her family knew of her real condition. The doctor talked to the family. He told them that their mother will not live any longer because her kidney failure is in advanced stage. Now they were given two choices: whether to stay in the hospital to wait for her end, or go home to wait for her death there. Since the family knew that they do not have much money, they decided to take her home. My wife asked me if we can be of help by referring her case to some benevolent. I said you ask first the family if they are willing to spend because the help that we can get will only do so much that cannot cover everything that she needs in the hospital, they should have their “equity” as well. And the reply was negative. As of this writing the poor woman is in pain, very weak and dying at home with no professional care. One of their relatives advised the family not to prolong her agony. Let her sit down (this is based on their folklore in Bugallon, Pangasinan) in a position embracing her husband or anybody in the family, and shortly she will expire. None of them would dare to do it, anyway. The point is if they could only afford to have her checked by a medical specialist at an early stage, she would have not have been suffering too much for a long time. If they could only afford to stay in the hospital for her treatment, she may live longer. But the sad truth is many poor people die without even knowing the would-be cause of their death for lack of opportunity to be seen by a good doctor. On the other hand, Dolphy is fortunate to prolong his life because they have the money for the treatment by specialists. Many rich people managed to escape death because they had means to survive. It is so glaring truth that even in death, there is a division between rich and poor: death hurries to the poor and tarries for the rich. And even in the grave there is distinction between rich and poor. But one thing I am sure of. There is a real distinction at the other dimension. Not between rich and poor, but it is between those who died with Christ in their hearts and those who have none.
