UPCOMING DOCUMENTARY: THE PUBLIC SCHOOL WARS On Emanuel’s Longer School Day: Like lawyers, doctors and all other professions, teachers need time to plan, prepare, confer and learn from their colleagues, not to mention the time it takes to assess student work and write individualized feedback that will help each student to improve. The longer school day robbed teachers of what little time they once had to do this. None of the school systems around the world--whose students outperform ours—organize their teachers’ time in this manner. Their teachers spend half the time American teachers spend in front of students. What’s important about this is what these teachers in high performing systems do when they’re not in from of students: they work with colleagues to learn, to plan, to develop lessons and rehearse them, to watch their colleagues teach and offer feedback designed to improve one another’s lessons. That’s how high performing school systems organize their teachers’ time. The “longer school day” model is just as ineffective for teachers as the “longer court day” model would be for an attorney. Both the teacher and the attorney are left with little time to do the kind of research, study, planning and preparation needed to do their jobs effectively in the courtroom and the classroom. To the degree that any school system or individual school adopts this model, the academic growth of its students will suffer the consequences. https://youtube/watch?v=_H1AVUlqWnA
