UPDATE! Its been a long day! David was scheduled for surgery at 9:30 but did not actually go into surgery until about 1:30 this afternoon. His surgery went perfectly according to the head resident of the orthopedic team that spoke with Megan and myself. They did do a partial hip replacement on his right side, as well as inserting a rod into his right femur. They said the cancer had eaten away so much of the femoral ball that what they saw on the MRIs was actually the cement that they put in during the kypoplasty sticking out. The bone had essential disintegrated. In his words, His hip bone was as close to breaking as you can possibly get without it actually happening. Can you imagine the pain he must have been experiencing? When I think about all that we have done in the last few weeks that has put stress on his legs and hip, I am reminded how blessed we have been that it didnt break. He was in quite a bit of pain when I left. I am hoping that they can give him enough pain medication to keep it under control. They were going to do both of his legs today but decided it might be too much on his body. And they also did not want to take the chance that they would mess with too much bone marrow that could potentially throw fat into his system. I so appreciate the precautions they took today. He will have his left leg tended to on Thursday. They will be placing a pin in his left hip to stabilize it to eliminate the fear of fracture. That will be a much less invasive procedure and in most cases would actually be an outpatient procedure. Crazy, I know!! On Saturday he will have his spinal surgery at his T4 vertebrae. The same surgery as before but in a different location on his spine. Dr. Alstadt is being gracious enough to do the surgery on Saturday before he leaves for vacation on Sunday for two weeks. When I asked him if he normally did surgeries on Saturday he simply said, Ill do it for the two of you. Good man, good heart, brilliant surgeon. Today has a been a much better day believe it or not. As the day was wearing on the fear began to creep in until someone reminded me that the fact that he was in there that long was because they decided they could actually do all that they wanted to do. How blessed are we that we live in a society of medical advancement that can change the outcome of a terrible diagnosis? We have another long road ahead. To be completely real with all of you Im not taking it well. I am tired and worn. BUT I am not without hope! Yesterday was really hard. Today was better. As David Crowder shares in one of his latest songs... There’s no space that His love can’t reach There’s no place that we can’t find peace There’s no end to Amazing Grace Take me in with your arms spread wide Take me in like an orphan child Never let go, never leave my side. I am holding on to You. I am holding on to You. In the middle of the storm, I am holding on, I am. We are holding on. We are grateful for your love, support and prayers. The journey we are traveling would not be complete with each of you. Megan Sparks Bracken Luke Sparks Matt Bracken David Sparks Carol Sparks Mickey Mosher
