UPV and UPAA Iloilo Chapter honor outstanding alumni The UP Alumni Association Incorporated (UPAA)-Iloilo Chapter in collaboration with UP Visayas through the Office of Alumni Relations (AOR) gave special recognition to alumni who have typified the University’s tradition of excellence and brought honor to UPV in addition to career accomplishments. Seven alumni achievers were given awards during the Alumni and Faculty Homecoming Dinner, which was held on July 20, 2013 at the Kalantiao Hall, Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, Iloilo City. They are: - Consul General Noel Eugene M. Servigon is the Most Distinguished Alumnus for presently serving as Consul-General of the Philippine Embassy in Hong Kong, and for heading a number of Philippine Foreign Service Posts in Indonesia, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Netherlands and Austria. Servigon also manages several offices in charge of relations with the office of the United Nations and other international organizations on food and agriculture, human rights and other humanitarian affairs. He also put in place a strong network to reach out to as many migrant Filipinos abroad. - Ms. Mae P. Cababasay excelled in the field of Natural and Mathematical Sciences for her expertise in Mathematical Statistics, Environmental Science and Biology that landed her to become a Biostatistician in the Center for Biostatistics in AIDS Research at the Harvard School of Public Health. She also gained extensive academic experience as a teacher, teaching assistant, and statistician involved in data management, statistical analysis and scientific researches. She also contributed to research as author of locally and internationally published articles on economics and biosciences. - Justice Edward B. Contreras got the spot for the Law and Judiciary category. He is presently serving as Associate Justice of the Court of Appeals after having served as Regional Trial Court Judge for 10 years. He has worked in the local government and the judiciary as Municipal Secretary, Provincial Administrator, Executive Judge, and Presiding Judge. He has been an active student leader and journalist during Martial Law period. - Mr. Samuel Cesar M. Gamboa was chosen in the field of Social Sciences and Human Ecology for his 25 years of involvement in Non-Government Organization (NGO) work that has carried out national and international campaigns and advocacy programs on human rights, environment, trade and social justice, and climate change. He managed development programs in Asia and the Philippines that enabled human rights victims to seek redress and remedies. He also coordinated crisis assistance to demolished urban poor and displaced peasant communities, and for provision of scholarships and educational assistance to human rights victims. - Brigadier General JUPV and UPAA Iloilo Chapter honor outstanding alumnioel R. Hinlo was an achiever in the field of Governance / Public Administration / Public Service for his courage and gallantry in action by drawing tactical plans to counteract enemy surprise attack during the 1989 failed coup attempt that earned him the most Distinguished Star Award. He was included in the Who’s Who in the World 2002 for his entrepreneurial skill in managing a health food company. He also served as Executive Director, Project Manager, and President of a number of agencies in Libya and the Philippines. - Engr. Ronaldo G. Josef stood out in the Engineering category for his technical expertise as accredited contractor and structural engineer that earned him prominent projects. He has served as consultant of public and private institutions involved in the design, construction, and renovation of civil engineering infrastructure. He has implemented livelihood and community projects as also an active member of the religious ministry. - Janet Jennifer Divinagracia-Luangsa-Ard, Ph.D. excelled in the field of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology. Her intensive academic training in tropical agriculture, biotechnology and biological sciences lead her to presently become the head of the Mycology Laboratory of the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Thailand. She has earned recognition from her fellow scientists in Asia and other countries abroad for her commendable expertise in invertebrate-pathogenic fungi, fungal taxonomy, molecular techniques and polygenetic methods. She is also an author of various scientific publications. Every year, the UPAA-Iloilo Chapter presents awards to alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments, professional achievements or humanitarian services that positively reflect and enhance the prestige of UPV This year’s search aimed at giving honor to outstanding alumni that belong to the following jubilarian years: Tin (2003), Crystal (1998), China (1993), Silver (1988), Pearl (1983), Coral (1978), Ruby (1973), Sapphire (1968), Gold (1963), Emerald (1958), Diamond (1953), and Blue Sapphire (1948).
