US military personnel warned of possible pay delays in event of govt shutdown Pay for US military service members stationed around the world could be delayed if Democrats and Republicans cannot agree on the economy and subsequently avoid a government shutdown by October 1. All 1.4 million active-duty military personnel and 800,000 civilian workers were told on Monday that the Defense Department has been “directed to review and update plans” for the potential shutdown. All personnel would still be required to show up to work but instead of receiving their pay, checks could be delayed for two weeks or until the next pay period, officials told CNN. Uniformed military personnel will be paid eventually because of a federal law mandating their compensation. However, civilians may be sent home with no way to recoup their lost wages.
