USGS geologists with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory who spent - TopicsExpress

USGS geologists with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory who spent the day monitoring the #PunaLavaFlow say it picked up speed today and is now moving about 15 yd/hr and is an estimated half a mile from Pāhoa Village Road. According to USGS, the flow is an estimated 75 yards from the Pāhoa cemetery, but its unclear if the lava will pass its outside edge or widen and cross through it. HVO scientists say the flow front is about 40 yards wide, but appears to be spreading out toward an open field. They say the pasture between Apaʻa Street and the cemetery is characterized by gentle topography, but the slopes increase at or just below the cemetery -- and if the flow reaches this point, its advance rate may increase. USGS says the pasture is located between two of the steepest decent paths plotted on HVO’s lava flow maps, and it is unclear at this point which path the flow will follow. Both paths, however, join just below the cemetery, so the overall flow path leading to Pāhoa Village Road is unchanged. USGS geologists who were out in the field all day say there have been frequent methane explosions at the flows leading edge -- one veteran described the activity as unnerving. This video, taken during our flyover with Paradise Helicopters, shows the flow in relation to both Pāhoa Village Rd., Post Office Rd. & Highway 130 near the Hawai‘i Academy of Arts & Sciences (HAAS) campus.
