USM plans to focus on new niche scientific research Posted on 21 January 2015 - 06:55pm Last updated on 21 January 2015 - 08:11pm Sarah Yeoh newsdesk@thesundaily GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia plans to focus on new niche scientific research segments in 2015. USM vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Omar Omsan said they comprise archaeology, drug addiction studies, halal vaccines, green technologies, disaster mitigation and local knowledge enhancement. He said halal vaccine research would be focused on developing vaccines for meningococcal meningitis and typhoid. Tests on the vaccine would continue this year with pre-clinical trials planned for the end of 2015, he added. He said archaeological research would focus on Malaysian prehistory while a Green Tech USM masterplan was currently in the works. The objective of delving into niche research is to enhance and improve an already high level of research in a particular subject, he said when addressing students and staff on plans for the university in 2015. USM plans to execute five strategic thrusts namely excellence, entrepreneurship and finance, institutional development and knowledge sharing in 2015 as part of phase two of the APEX (Accelerated Program for Excellence) which runs from 2014 to 2025. Omar also said projects to improve research efforts included building a RM30million research incubator at the universitys science extension in Bukit Jambul.
