Uh-oh. Another celebrity’s in trouble for offensive remarks. But uh-oh. It’s double-standard time. First one to get in hot water, of course, was Paula Deen, for admitting that she freely used the “N” word and made jokes about blacks among her friends. For which, she was dropped by everybody but her sons. Now it’s Alec Baldwin in hot water, for making gay slurs against a reporter, calling him a “toxic little queen.” But some people are defending Baldwin, saying he’s a gay-friendly liberal and didn’t really mean it. Come on! That’s baloney. We should not let Alec Baldwin off the hook. Frankly, I think Paula Deen got a raw deal. I don’t know anybody of her generation who grew up in the South, myself included, who didn’t use the “N” word – because we didn’t know any better. We’re ashamed of it, now. But: If Paula Deen loses her sponsorships because of slurs against blacks, then – I don’t care if he’s the biggest liberal on the planet - Alec Baldwin should lose his sponsorships because of slurs against gays. Then, at least, we won’t have to watch those dumb Capital One commercials, anymore. That’s my parting shot for today. -Bill Press
