Ulster Bank AIL Div 2B Boyne 13pts DLSP 29pts This game was preceded by an incessant downpour which thankfully ceased just prior to kick off at Shamrock Lodge last Saturday. The home side had hopes of picking up precious league points from this match but despite long periods of dominance they lost concentration at vital stages to hand the initiative to their opponents who gratefully accepted them to run in four tries and gain a bonus point in a 29pts total. Boyne had a total of 13pts for their efforts which consisted of a penalty try and conversion and a penalty each by Tyler Lansdowne and Karl Keogh. It took 31 minutes before the first score came with out half Lansdowne landing a penalty when DLSP went offside at a maul. Boyne were in command for most of the opening minutes and this score was just reward for their efforts. Their forwards were dominant in the set scrums but they could not turn their possession into scores. Whilst the rain had abated nevertheless, conditions were still difficult with a wet ball contributing to handling errors. DLSP took just four minutes to respond and a long kick out of defence by Boyne saw the visitors winger make a break down the right and cut deep into Boyne territory before transferring to his full back who crossed for a try in the corner. The same player managed a superb conversion from the touchline to put 7 pts on the scoreboard for his side. Just three minutes later DLSP had another try under the posts when their outside centre, Adam Philpot, intercepted inside his own 22 to sprint all the way to the Boyne posts for the touchdown. It was a relatively easy kick for the conversion to bring them to 14 pts in the space of three minutes. This was a cruel score and came after a great break by Boyne out half Lansdowne that started in midfield and brought him deep into opponent territory. He was supported by centre Ronan O Brien but failed to get his pass away to leave OBrien who had a clear run in. From the ensuing ruck Boyne moved the ball wide and the DLSP centre intercepted to inflict a fatal blow on the 38th minute. Boyne also had the first of three players sin binned before half time when hooker Patrick Shuttleworth found himself admonished for a ruck infringement Boyne did have another penalty on the stroke of half time when No. 8 Karl Keogh landed a monster of a kick from just inside his own half to leave the half time score 14pts to 6pts. DLSP pushed out their lead on the 44th minute when their excellent kicker and full back, Kevin Burke landed another penalty to leave them on 17pts and in a commanding position. Boyne had their fair share of possession but failed time and again to turn it into any meaningful gain. They also lost possession too easily and their decision making at times played into the hands of the opposition who brutally capitalized on these errors. Boynes discipline also let them down when a further two players received yellow cards during the 2nd half with Hugh Carolan binned for a late tackle on the 45th minute and John Kermath on the 74th minute for a foul at a ruck. Boyne were pressing the DLSP line at the time and were awarded a penalty which was subsequently reversed to relieve the danger for DLSP. The DLSP third try on the 56th minute was another Boyne disaster which came from an attempted clearance that went straight to the DLSP replacement winger, Martin Smith who sprinted over from 25 out to touch down in the corner. They missed the conversion. The home side continued to battle and their dominance in the set scrum paid dividends on the 75th minute when they applied pressure on the visitors through several scrums which eventually saw the referee lose patience with the DLSP scrum and ran under the posts for a penalty try. DLSP also had two players yellow carded in the 2nd half when prop, Keith Taite and winger Ian OConnor binned on the 60th and 72nd minutes. However, it was DLSP who finished on a high when they landed their 4th try and the bonus point when their out half, Scott Finlay, sprinted over for the try on the 80th minute which they converted to leave the final score 13pts to 29pts. The scoreline flattered the visitors somewhat and their win and bonus point made their journey home a satisfying trip. Boyne have yet to find a winning formula and this game should have produced a better result for them. Next Saturday they make the trip their third trip this season to Cork when they play Middleton.
