Under 14 19 v 22 Ely Rugby Club - Away Friendly on 26 Jan 2014 Published on Sunday, 26 January 2014 Ely 22 - Saints 19 The Journey continues!! If this was a football match it would have been abandoned. The weather was awful, from the moment the game kicked off the heavens opened even more. St Neots started playing with the wind at their backs and up hill, the ground was very wet and slippery. The game plan was to kick for territory and let the forwards pummel Elys forwards. That was exactly what happened, long kicks into Elys half with some fantastic kicking from Lucas, fast running from Ben & Joe putting their players under pressure causing them to drop the ball and knock on. The resulting scrums were immense lead by Captain Ryan and our new players at hooker & Gods own position second row we never lost a scrum. This resulted with 2 forward trys from Billy & Ryan. Converted both by Lucas we were leading after 10 minutes 0-14. Ely were worried after the 2nd try went over they changed 6 player, clearly the lads coming on were a step up on the guys coming off. 15 minutes passed in our half trying to get out. Ely were brilliant at attacking with St Neots strong in defence. Something had to give and Ely went over in the corner conversion missed 5 - 14 at half time. In the second half St Neots changed 6 players, we were going down hill but against the wind. From the off Ely was attacking again, deep in St Neots 22, Ely managed to get a lucky ball and went over for a try still not converted 10-14. Lucas kicked off unfortunately it went to their best player who ran the ball over line 15-14. The battle continued both teams playing some fantastic rugby in the worst conditions Ive had the pleasure to be involved with. Elys attack still had us pegged down until another lucky call earned themselves a try which they converted to make the score 22-14. Dan had come on again for the injured Lucas at number 10 kicked the ball deep into Elys 22 the result was a great tackle James. The Ely player failed to release the ball penalty to Saints. Sean then fed Ryan who was bundled out of touch. Line out 5 metres out to Ely and the last play of the match. The pressure that St Neots forwards put on Ely caused the ball to bounce over Elys try line with Tom jumping on it to score the final try of the game, which was not converted. Match finished 22-19. We continue to improve and get better. Many thanks to the parents for bring and supporting this great Saints team. So Proud!! Bring on Towcester next week at home in the league.
