SAN DIEGO — For University of San Diego professor Mitchell Malachowski, how students are taught is just as important as what they are taught. “The simple fact is, what we do in the classroom is important, but what students do outside the classroom is being shown as more important,” Malachowski said recently from his USD office overlooking Mission Valley. Malachowski said he believes his approach to teaching and his emphasis on student research were instrumental in his recent recognition as California Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
