Undergrad research ‘Transformational’ University of San Diego Mitchell Malachowski, shown in the lab with one of his students, is nationally recognized for promoting undergraduate research. SAN DIEGO — For University of San Diego professor Mitchell Malachowski, how students are taught is just as important as what they are taught. “The simple fact is, what we do in the classroom is important, but what students do outside the classroom is being shown as more important,” Malachowski said recently from his USD office overlooking Mission Valley. Malachowski said he believes his approach to teaching and his emphasis on student research were instrumental in his recent recognition as California Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The organic chemistry professor picked up his award Nov. 20 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. “I think the award is more for what I do with my students here at USD,” said Malachowski, whose research focuses on developing metal organic compounds that could trap greenhouse gases and store hydrogen gas for fuel. “A big goal at a place like USD is to engage students in our work,” he said. “One of the [...] newsinca/undergrad-research-transformational/
