Understanding the Anointing This is a popular term that many of us must be farmiliar with. You hear it in churches, crusades and open airs frequently. But excactly whats up with the anointing? What does it signify? Whats the whole fuss about it? Interestingly, anointing began originaly with ancient sheperds. They would pour in oil in the sheep to protect them against harmful insects who normaly would get in the sheeps wool and eventualy kill it by getting to its ear. With a sheep anointed, the insect would bounce off the slippery wool. Humans began to adopt this practice for similar purposes. To anoint means to smear or rub with oil. The implication is to consecrate someone for a particular service. It signified a blessing or when one recieves a calling. In Exodus we begin to see the practice(chapters 29:7,and 40:9). Among those anointed would be kings, prophets, builders etc. In the New Testament Jesus was Anointed by God with not oil,but the Holy Spirit for the purpose of preaching the gospel and free those held captive by sin(Luke 4:18-19). The title Christ in itself means The Anointed. Jesus then left but gave us the Holy Spirit to further the work of spreading the gospel. What this means is that Christians have got the anointing(1 John 2:20). If you are a Christian today and have Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are anointed and chosen for the purpose of advancing Gods Kingdom. No need to recieve further anointing than the one youve got! Stay blessed. Big Love!!!
