Unfortunately, the voices of folks who called, wrote, and testified to pass what we believe is an equitable Park Board budget were not heard this evening. The Admin and Finance Committee of the Park Board voted to reject a resolution to restore funding from excessive cuts to neighborhood parks in Lyndale and East Harriet neighborhoods. Staff had a difficult task of proposing a budget for the Park Board to vote on in the face of limited resources. I opposed this budget because 78% of cuts and delays to neighborhood park maintenance projects in the 2015 budget are at two parks, 6 blocks from each other in one of the most diverse areas of the city. Thank you to those who took the time to call, write, and testify at the Park Board. I’m particularly proud of our Spanish speaking neighbors who brought their own translators to the Park Board so they could share their concerns. The Park Board will make a final, non-televised vote on December 10th at City Hall. While I don’t believe the votes exist to restore equitable funding strategies in this year’s budget, you have one more opportunity to contact Commissioners before our final vote on Dec 10th. My apologies to those of you we’ve failed.
