Unidentified and flying but I think of terrestrial origin. I was looking at the OHare traffic that goes by here because I was curious about the flight path they happened to be using tonight and because its a nice chilling-out sort of thing to do on the porch while you catch a breeze on a warm summer night. Then I noticed something that I had to strain to see. It was moving up the lakefront along kind of the same path that small planes and the occasional military helicopter will use. After I was satisfied that there really was something moving in the air, I forgot about it. I was mainly concerned that my eyes were working properly. Then it suddenly occurred to me that whatever it is had no lights on. I could see the outline of a shape only because of the light of the city—all the streetlights, etc.—were getting on it. A small plane or a helicopter on the same path and apparent altitude I would be able to hear. I couldnt hear anything but there is a lot of background noise in the neighborhood so I wont go as far as saying the thing was silent, only relatively quiet as aircraft go. Since it was just a barely discernible gray shape in the sky, I had nothing to go by that would give me a sense of scale. Because the military regularly use the lakefront for a flightpath, I think something along the lines of a Reaper drone doing a practice flight is safely within the realm of probability. If that what it was, or at least something around the same size, that would put it about 200-250 feet above the shoreline doing around 150mph.
