Up at 5 am in Beijing. 11:15 flight to Vienna. 10 more hours in the Sky Tube. Rent car at Vienna airport. Drive 2 hours. Getting way too sleepy. Pull over in a tiny town (Kindberg, pop.: not very many), find a quiet parking lot, pop the seat back, lose consciousness almost immediately. Wake up an hour later, turn the key in the ignition. Aaaaaaaand nothing. Rented The Worlds Most Basic Car, and it doesnt automatically turn the lights off, evidently. So, with no local SIM card for my phone, I start talking to the (very occasionally occurring) pedestrian, all of whom explain they have no cables. Then, luckily, I spot a passing police patrol. I explain my pickle, they nod quietly, speed off, and reappear 5 minutes later with jumper cables. Aaaaaaand...nothing. Thats one DEAD battery. After determining that the nearest hotel is 6 km away, the three of us finally get our Arnold on and push the car up the slight incline of the parking lot. Cop #1 is at the wheel, while Cop #2 and I run and push the quietly compliant car. And then! Poof! Cop #1 pops the clutch in second gear and the darned thing comes back to life. I finally reach my mountain destination where I will teach at the Thomas Leeb Guitar Boot Camp, and collapse in bed at 1 am Austrian time, 26 hours after I woke up in China. Thank you, awesome cops of Kindberg, Austria. You saved me a monstrous amount of grief. Xoxo
