Update 141226 We are often told by folks that we shouldn’t get cold because we had lived in Alaska. Let us tell you something: When you haven’t experienced extreme cold for a while, you get just as cold as everyone else around you.That happened to us this morning. We put on just about every piece of clothes we owned because it was 32 degrees out. Now that’s really funny because in the past we went ice fishing at -20 to -30. Happy we saved some of that extreme weather clothing. We were on our way out to do a little tautog fishing. There have been so few days lately that were suitable for a trip offshore. The forecast predicted variable winds around 6 knots, sunny and high temps in the 50s. what more can we ask for? Perhaps a little water in Quinby Bay. Low tide was at around 5AM so knowing the condition of the channel, we left around 7:30. Well, not enough water. The SeaWyf was high and dry for about a half hour. After finally wiggling ourselves free, we headed out to the inlet, chasing up a flock of bufflehead and few loons. The mystical sky and wonderfully calm sea welcomed us. Numerous gannets floated on the ocean and occasionally made a graceful dive to grab a morsel of food. The ride out was exhilarating at 27 mph. Set the anchor and began fishing. Not much action. The ‘tog were there but just not in the mood to bite. They’d nudge the bait a bit, then leave. After about an hour, Martin finally hooked a decent fish, around 20 inches. The action did not pick up but Ruta got a twin a few hours later. It warmed up quite a bit and we were striping off clothes almost as fast as we were able. We left earlier than we wanted to due to concerns about the late afternoon low tide. But the only excitement back in the inlet were an enormous flock of brant we chased up.
