Update: I spent the afternoon/evening with the family. I have to tell ya, there are no words to describe the devastation to their lives. I got out of my car to see the dad standing in paper coveralls covered in soot, watching the fire and water restoration crew cut boards to cover the windows and door for the only 3 openings left to access the home. The grandfather sat in his truck, the only thing he has left to his name besides the clothes on his back, as he watched what was the place he called home be walked around and secured. We waited on the mother to arrive back from the hospital, her PET scan was today to determine how far her cancer has spread. As the hours passed, I learned a lot about the family. Talking with them, finding out what their plans for the night was, and any next steps that I could assist with. I gathered sizes and took a trip to gather necessities, clothes, undergarments, socks and shoes, items for the baby, and some light snacks and food for the night. When I returned, the mother was there, looking at her home in shock and horror of what had occurred in the past 24 hours. The most shocking and devastating news.... Red Cross provided ONE night voucher for the family, along with an emergency kit which included a toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. The insurance company called to inform them that the adjuster wouldnt be available for 2 wks to come out, due to the Holiday. They were instructed to save all receipts of money spent to be reimbursed by the insurance company. The problem with this is......you have to have the money to spend. Herein lies the problem. Short of the items I brought from my closet, and the items I bought today, they have NOTHING. A few people did stop by with a few clothes items, 1 package of diapers, a couple gift cards, and a few items or the 3yr olds Christmas. They will have to purchase food, clothing, necessities, and the big expense...a place to lay their head at night. Even if the insurance adjuster does come out in 2 wks, the expenses at that point will be astronomical....and we all know the reimbursement check will not be written on the spot. So, I ask....I beg you, please go to the Go Fund Me account and donate. Even if its just $5, it all adds up. This family has suffered more devastation over the past month with the Moms diagnosis of cancer, and now theyve lost everything they have. We have an obligation as human beings to help someone in need. Skip your Starbucks coffee, your $10 lunch bill, or that $50 game you were intending on buying come Friday. This family needs help more than you need your coffee, your lunch bill, or that stupid game you would stand in line for hours to save a few bucks on Friday. Please help....Go Fund Me Account in the comments below.
