Update on the rescue rabbits... Yesterday and today, 2 of the females delivered litters of kits. At their old farm, they had been housed together with a male and another female. Sadly, neither girl chose to care for their respective litters. We were hopeful that the 2nd group would fair better than the first, since that mama had built a much nicer nest for them, but it wasnt to be. Some of the babes had deformities, like no ears. Others, Im not sure of, because the mamas did what mama rabbits will sometimes do, especially rabbits that have a history of being malnourished. Its very sad that things turned out as they did, but is better for those girls in the long run. They still need to put some weight on for their own health... neither of them could really afford to be feeding babies... especially deformed ones. If you buy baby animals, PLEASE make sure youre buying from a reputable breeder. And PLEASE dont breed animals unless you know what youre doing. These rabbits should NOT have been bred to start with, and with the number of deformities showing up in their litters, there are clearly issues with the parent rabbits... or at least with their pairings. The moms and dad may even be siblings, and thats a big no-no! At least now we know they wont be bred again, and theyll have time to recuperate from the poor treatment they received at their former home.
