(Updated from the article in this weeks Salmon River News) The 3rd annual Eastern Lake Ontario Winter Carnival will move this year from Sandy Pond to Pulaski. “With the Steak House closing, it just makes sense to move the event,” said Shawn Doyle, one of the coordinators. Sponsored by Preservation and Revitalization of Pulaski (PROP) with a joint effort from the Greater Pulaski Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, the winter carnival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, February 1-2, with a kick-off on Friday, January 31. The carnival will highlight several Pulaski businesses and not-for-profit organizations. To encourage families to come out and participate, free hot chocolate will be offered throughout the village with the purchase of a travel mug, priced at $5.00. The mug can be refilled for free at all participating businesses and not-for-profits throughout the entire weekend. (The Hot cocoa mix and packets has been donated) Kick-off events include the Friday night fish fry at Pulaski’s American Legion from 5-7 pm followed by County Girl Karaoke with Teresa Ward downstairs at the legion---open to the public from 8-12. Just north of the village Ma Barker’s will have a DJ from 9 pm until closing, and 11 North will feature Joe Battles beginning at 9 p.m. Beginning Saturday, February 1, at 10 am, the Salmon River Fine Arts Center will hold a writing class followed by the Tug Hill Players in the afternoon. Cocoa and snacks will be offered to visitors at the center in the heart of downtown. From 10 am till sell-out, the Pulaski Masons will have a chicken barbeque in the South Park, where diners can take their dinners just north of the cookers to the historic Masonic hall on Broad Street where everyone is welcome to eat and enjoy complimentary hot coffee and cocoa. Dinners are $8 as they are in the summer and include potatoes, salad and baked beans. There will be some historic displays on hand at the Lodge, which will be open throughout the day, from 10 am through midafternoon. Also on Saturday, from 9-1 the Pulaski Public Library will host an open house “Bring the Kids to the Library Day.” From 6:30-7:30 pm, the library will host the Caine Magic Show where refreshment will be available. The Pulaski Historical Society on Maple Ave will be open in the afternoon for tours Saturday, with free cocoa and coffee available. Stop and see the changing exhibits and research material. Back downtown, From 2-6 pm, the John Glenn Band will be playing at LD’s Ale House followed at 9-pm to close by DJ, Slick Rick. At Rt. 11 North the “Hellfish” will play from 9-1 and Ma Barkers will host Karaoke. This Saturday night looks to be an active one in Pulaski…. Sunday, February 2, will feature a chili/wing walk with the several local restaurants and a couple of not-for-profits participating. Cards will be available for $5 that will entitle the purchaser to receive two wings and a cup of chili at each participating establishment. The card has rating numbers that we are asking to be circled at the end of the day when fare from each establishment has been sampled. In this manner the wings and chili at each location can be judged. Commemorative plagues will be awarded to the winning establishments and a trophy for each food that will travel from location to location as we hope this will become an annual event. Proceeds from the chili/wing walk will benefit the Restoration of the Historic Pulaski Masonic Temple. Thus far, participating locations are: the End Zone, The Pulaski Masons, American Legion, LD’s Ale House, Ma Barkers, 11-North, and Ponderosa. Also on Sunday, sponsored by PROP and the Dragon Garden Restaurant, a 5-K snowshoe race will be held at the Haldane Center at noon. There is a $15 participation fee if paid by January 28. Checks should be made payable to PROP and mailed to 85 Lake Street in Pulaski. A $20 pre-registration the day of the race will be from 11-11:45. There will also be a children’s’ mile-long fun run. Goodie bags will be given to the first 100 registrants. Snowshoes will be available for rent for an additional $5. Awards will be given to the first, second and third place winners in both races. At 1 pm, door prizes will be awarded. In addition, Inside the Haldane Center, the Salmon River Hockey Association will be having hockey tournaments throughout the day beginning at 8:30 am. Across the river, Dog sled rides will be available from 1-4 pm at Dunbar Field on Lewis Street where donations will be accepted. The dog sled rides have been a popular feature of the festival while at the Pond, and we hope to keep the tradition alive this year. Throughout the weekend hot cocoa will be the unifying offering around town. Insulated festival mugs will be sold at all the participating locations for $5, and can be filled at these locations with cocoa throughout the weekend. Profits from the mug sales will support festival costs. “We are hoping to highlight all our area business and not-for-profits,” said Doyle, “Unfortunately, we have to forgo the polar bear plunge this year because we cannot find insurance that will allow a plunge in the river. We will try to have something in place for next year’s carnival.” The Masons Lodge on Broad Street in back of Byrne Dairy will be the “go to place” for information throughout the weekend. For information before hand, or over the weekend, contact Shawn Doyle at 532-5919.
