The people that they had looking over us who cared… It was our own little world….It was such a wonderful experience.” ~Paula Brown DDC 73 Welcome to Testimonial Tuesday our 10-part online series where we share a quote on how Double Discovery helped one of its graduates. In our sixth post, we hear from Paula Brown wh shared her thoughts on the program. “[Double Discovery] helped me develop a sense of who I was. At that age [teenage years], everyone is looking and searching for who they are… It helped me get a sense of what I was and be comfortable with what I was.” “Upward Bound was the best of everything. The best people. The best courses. The best [campus] to be on. The people that they had looking over us who cared… It was our own little world on that campus….It was such a wonderful experience.” Brown credited her summer counselor and teacher Lindamichelle Baron for “opening [her] world up to poetry and plays.” Brown, who attended Queens College, retired from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 2002. She worked as a conductor. Her love of poetry and playwriting still remain. In 2013, her works “Sky and Praised” and “Mina and Jules” were featured in the Elders Arts Festival sponsored by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and Nia Productions. Her newest play “Beautiful in His Time” debuts in the spring of 2015. Currently, Lindamichelle Baron is an assistant professor in the Teacher Education department at York College. She is also the president and founder of Harlin Jacque Publications, a publishing and educational consulting company. A published poet and author, Dr. Baron has written books such as The Sun Is On, Rhythm & Dues, For the Love of Life and Anthony Ant and Grady Grasshopper.
