Us When a lot of people think of “us” they think of it as a reference to African Americans, Black folk if you will, because it’s “us” that basically coined the reference. Throughout this message, in this immediate sense, I’m referring to “us” as a Jesus people. Now hold up Liv, did you just say “Jesus people”? That’s right, I did. That’s one common error that us as Jesus people make. When we say “Christian,” it’s in reference to a title of a religious affiliation. When one speaks or even thinks of Jesus, immediately an internal and external brightness approaches. Just to think of a man who hung his head low, so that we could hold ours high and live for a God who made the ultimate sacrifice for many, undeserving many. A lot of us, as Jesus people, make the same mistakes. What you sayin’ Liv? Let’s take a minute to dissect this. When situations arise, we want to just run to God and beg and plead for answer, but that’s all you’re doing: praying, begging, and pleading. Don’t get me wrong, yes, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says “pray without ceasing,” but the Bible does say in James 2:26, “…faith without works is also dead.” In order to do the work before God, you have to do as Habakkuk 2:2-3 says, it says, “…Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, and it will not tarry.” Now, once you’ve written your vision, follow in the steps of God’s path, and pray on it all, that your plan and God’s plan go along with each other, then there is no need to be weary. You want confirmation? Here it is: Proverbs 3:5-6 say “TRUST in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in ALL your ways acknowledge Him and He SHALL direct your paths.” You have to trust God to do what He says He’ll do, and have the faith that He’ll do it. Hey Liv, you make it sound like an easy process, anybody should be able to have faith. Well, it’s not easy at all. The devil is always after your faith tempting you with these deceitful detours on your straight path you’re taking with God. It’s okay to take a detour, but as soon as you acknowledge it, you have to find your way back to God. But what if I’ve detoured too far? What if God won’t accept me back into His arms? No worries, God is a God of everlasting mercy and He is so awesomely forgiving. A big problem, we as Jesus people face, is not the fact that we’ve taken a detour, not the fact that God is there, but the mere fact that we subconsciously know that God is there even in the deepest of detours. Let me clarify, in the back of our minds, we know that God is always going to be there, so we don’t take the initiative to run to God and acknowledge our mistakes, or if we do come running to God, it’s because there has been something to happen on a traumatic or drastic level, then we think, “Oh yeah! God! You’re the one I need!” It shouldn’t have to be that way, what happened to thank God for every breath we take? What happened to thanking God for the blessing of life? Instead of blaming God for what has happened to us, why don’t we thank God for the new mercies received because we’re not dead, or the blessings that are sure to come as a result of all this trial and tribulation? What happened to thanking God? We’ve become too comfortable in our relationship with God. To put it in even more plainly, we’re taking advantage of God. Go ahead and admit it, we’re all guilty of it. Think about it, have you ever done something that isn’t exactly pleasing to God, but you didn’t quite think about it? Or maybe just saying the age-old phrase, “Jesus knows my heart.” Does God really know your heart? Does He really know that you have a love for Him so real, no man can ever live up to that level? Not to say that you’ll gain a sense of disappointment in man for not living by God’s standards, but to have perfect love in your heart from a perfect God. Let’s put it into perspective, I myself don’t listen to rap, I can’t stand it, I always say “I don’t like the young people’s music,” but I do like to watch the BET Awards, the one thing these rappers throw in is, “And I have to thank God, without Him, I’m nothin’” but have you checked out the lyrics of these songs lately? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to discredit any Jesus people, but that’s a mighty fine way of showing your love for God by “rapping” about what completely opposes Him. My basic point that I’m trying to make is, I’m a Christian by title, but a Jesus person by faith. I’m not a crazy person who wants to breathe Jesus down your neck. I’m just a person loves Jesus like crazy.
