At first I had to rely on free software on google which provides legitimate links to free anti-spyware programs. One day I needed one of those programs in a hurry. I did a Google search and clicked on the first link I found in the Google hit list. The link took me to a hijacked website. Pop-ups immediately came up on my pc. Fortunately I knew how to stop them before anything was downloaded [When a popup is showing on your desktop — dont click on it! Right click on the Windows Taskbar item and choose Close].
