Utopia When The Blues pays you a visit Give him a crown Not a frown Leave him there Upon a lazy chair And come with me, son On a journey through Hope’s meandering path. I’ll show you the place Where restless souls wail One, a hundred, thousands, millions, billions. This is just by the path near Despair’s abode Where they ask for a minute’s chance to be Some steps to straighten. We’ll leave there and continue on the path. Mind you, there are thorns, mountains and valleys, giant iron walls. We’ll take them one after the other. But did you know, my son That Confidence has his hut on Hope’s path? Yeeees! he does. So one day, Confidence said he would pull down a star from the skies, and when Diffidence heard this, he paid Confidence a surprise visit. Like a dark cloud, he blocked the path. That man, Diffidence, his darkness reaches far and his influence far and wide. But haha! I tell you, son, Confidence shoved Diffidence aside and went on his mission. That man, Confidence, he’s tough. As I speak to you now, the star is mid-way down. Can you imagine that, son? Aha! Where was i? Aha!—forgive me, son. I need to pull on my socks, so we can start this journey. Oh! Old age! This is why Destiny my wife sometimes rails at me Says I am careless. But I tell you what, son, me….i’m never careless. Never! I care more for the things that need care most, Less for those that don’t deserve it. That’s why, son, I know this place, where I’m taking you today. Let The Blues remain in that seat, we have a journey to go. So—oh, where was I again? Aha! Even Destiny my wife, she got punished And learnt her lesson. The jitters got her down. And she didn’t remember the things she had cared for. See? I, son, showed her the way. When she came back, she was quiet. Yes! Destiny was quiet and her priorities were set right! Hm! You see the path that I’m talking about? Hope’s path….there are a lot of squatters there. But Hope leaves them there….no ejection orders. No wonder Optimism also made his shack there! Hm! That man is some character! One day he looked out his window and announced that there was Utopia on Earth. Can you just imagine that?! But I believed him. Yes, that was after I went out to investigate. There was a dog barking at me; I smiled and went on. A man spat upon my face; I laughed and wiped my face. The bandits took my sack loaded with yam. I turned my pockets and called them back. “Hey, friends, take this, too.” The rain whipped me; the sun scorched me. Even the road became treacherously slippery; I fell And patted it on the shoulder, and got up. Son, these things happened….and many more! But, see, I was focused on looking for Utopia. So I never answered back. So I went on, through the minutes, the hours, the whole day. But son, I didn’t meet him. I didn’t! But I wasn’t mad at Optimism I came home to a saltless meal Destiny had set upon my table. I ate it and licked my fingers. Son, that was the sweetest thing. I went to bed, and, that day, I slept like a log. In my dream, I saw Utopia and asked him, “Why did you elude me?” He said, “I never eluded you. I watched you as you set out in the morning. When you ignored that barking dog, I came two steps forward, but waited in doubt. But when you smiled at the mean man who spat on you, I came with you, full swing. Did you have any cares after your journey?” Son, do you know? I said no. He said, “Yes, you created me, invited me, allowed me to walk with you. I didn’t fall from the skies” Son, that was Utopia’s answer And since rising from bed that morning, I carry him with me, wherever I go. So, son, eheh! So Hope allows a lot of squatters on his path. Courage is one of them. I’ll tell you about him soon. First, let me tell you about Faith, another squatter on Hope’s path. Faith is a stubborn man…. Oh, my snuff! Get it for me, son, we’ll go on this journey. “Grandpa, Blues is gone! He has run away!” Ohoo! Come, let’s go, son. We have a long way. “Grandpa, I’ve already travelled the path with you. The journey is right here. Ooohooii!! Utopia come my home oo!! Haha! Hm! Small boys are young! Copyright by Felicious Nangnuor (Arrimeh Debwan-yir)
