VALERY PONOMAREV - trumpet On the VOA: Chris Brubeck described the reception that he and his brothers got on Dave Brubecks 1974 Russian Tour. Older fans came up to them in tears of joy saying they thought they’d never get another chance to hear Brubeck live. A couple of fans showed them some used X-ray slides. They had a disc cutter and used the slides to copy Brubeck’s Voice of America Concerts and would have highly secret listening parties during the long period in which Jazz was banned in the Soviet Union. Jiri George Mraz was unable to return with Oscar Peterson to Czechoslovakia (Theyll throw me in jail...) in around 1972.
