#VBNSWCUP MATCH REVIEW Round 16 v Manly Sea Eagles – Sat 29/6 @ Brookvale Oval WOLVES PREVAIL IN THE WET The Wolf Pack returned to the winner’s circle after a hard fought 20-6 win over Manly at Brookvale Oval today where remarkably despite the oppressive wet conditions, both sides were able to complete 75-80 percent of their sets in what was a typical wet weather game. Windsor made some late changes with another member of the Panthers Holden Cup squad, backrower Chris Smith making his NSW Cup debut alongside new recruit from the Eels, prop Matt Eisenhuth. Wes Naiqama was also a late inclusion after overcoming his recent injury concerns & started in the centres for Windsor. Manly scored first in the 5th minute after a kick retrieval for winger George Jennings went horribly wrong as he lost the ball cold in running the ball back from his own try line which allowed Manly to quickly shift the ball left to unmarked winger Jackson Williams to slide over in the corner. A magnificent conversion by Dane Chisholm under the circumstances from the sideline gave Manly the 6-0 lead. The early set-back rattled the Wolf Pack but eventually they settled down for the grind completing their sets & getting to their kick. Manly were up for the grind too but undid much of their good work getting to the kick & applying pressure in the chase conceding relieving penalties close to Windsor’s try line. Windsor started to gain the upper hand through the kicking game of Capewell & Foster. One such Foster grubber kick forced Manly to restart play with a goal-line drop out & it was this pressure that allowed five eighth Luke Capewell to get Windsor on the scoreboard in the 20th minute after feigning to kick close to the Manly try line on the last tackle & instead stepped inside a wrong footed defender to score the try next to the posts, which Naiqama duly converted to level the scores 6-6. Minutes later, Jennings was forced from the field with a lower back spasm which forced a reshuffle resulting in impressive debutant Iszah Yeo coming on to play at left centre with Geoff Daniela switching to right centre. Yeo made an immediate impact dragging down Dane Chisholm from behind when it seemed the five eighth was set to score a runaway try for Manly. Minutes later Windsor dodged another bullet when centre Jacob Gagan was unlucky not to regather a difficult cross field kick from Dane Chisholm with Nabuli all but beaten in the in-goal area & at half time scores were still level at 6-6. On the back of another penalty conceded by Manly, Windsor hit the lead for the first time in the 54th minute when the skipper Anthony Cherrington ran a great line off a short pass from Capewell to score to the left of the posts from 10m out. Naiqama missed the conversion leaving Windsor in front 10-6. The next five minutes saw Windsor trapped in their own half as Manly applied plenty of pressure only to be denied by resolute defense. Another penalty conceded by Manly soon after allowed the Windsor backline to set deep for a set play from right to left before Capewell once again provided Cherrington with a saloon passage to the tryline this time from 20m out with another well timed short pass, giving the Wolves the biggest lead of the match to date at 14-6 with 17 minutes remaining. Windsor started to get on top of Manly at this point but couldn’t land the killer punch through poor options taken on the last tackle, until half Liam Ayoub intercepted a wayward pass to run 70m to seal the game for Windsor near full time. The successful Naiqama conversion on the siren gave Windsor a much needed 20-6 win going into what will be a tough week for the Wolf Pack with games away from home against the Bears & Sharks. Coach Garth Brennan described the win as “a good gutsy effort in tough conditions. I’m particularly proud of the effort in defense conceding only one try & that was from a kick. I would have liked us to execute a little better at the end of some of our sets in that second half but I’m happy to get the 2 points at the end of the day. ” Anthony Cherrington produced a real captain’s knock & played his best game for Windsor to date. Luke Capewell with one try & two try assists also turned in a great performance while prop Sam Anderson was back to his industrious best. For Manly Dane Chisholm & Nick Skinner did everything possible to keep their team in the game. In injury news, George Jennings is in doubt for the Wolves mid week game for the Bears but otherwise all are in good shape as they keenly await the upcoming contest, while Manly travel to Kogarah to take on the Cutters on Saturday. Final Score: Windsor 20 (Tries: Cherrington 2, Capewell, Ayoub Goals: Naiqama 2/3 Capewell 0/1) def. Manly 6 (Try: J Williams Goal: Chisholm 1/1)
