VIRGINIA YOUNG DEMOCRATS CELEBRATE OPENING OF AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE EXCHANGES Richmond, VA – September 30, 2013 – News Release – Tomorrow, the Virginia Young Democrats will celebrate the opening of the healthcare exchanges under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that 27 million Americans will use these exchanges by 2018 to purchase affordable and competitive health insurance. “These new exchanges will offer access to affordable and competitive healthcare for thousands of Virginians, especially young professionals that are unable to purchase insurance through their employer,” said Gonzalo Aida, president of the Virginia Young Democrats. “More than 840,000 Virginians are currently uninsured and these exchanges will offer access to coverage at a reasonable price.” The Virginia Young Democrats stand with the Affordable Care Act and look forward to its full implementation. “If Virginians knew more about the law like that 3 million Virginians can no longer be denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition, including nearly 500,000 children, we’d have near universal support for the law,” said Andrew Goodwin, the Health Policy Caucus Chair of the Virginia Young Democrats. The Virginia Young Democrats have been participating with national Young Democrats of America and Virginia’s elected officials to raise awareness about the Affordable Care Act and the benefits of purchasing insurance through a social media campaign. “Over the last month, we have used our social media presence to increase awareness amongst our members and their social networks of the affordability, options and benefits of purchasing health insurance through the exchanges,” said James Lewis, public affairs director for the Virginia Young Democrats. “Our health policy caucus chair, Andrew Goodwin, has really lead this charge and worked with the offices of elected officials to obtain the quotes, facts and figures to make this program a success.” Concerning the GOP attempts to close the government because of Affordable Care Act funding, public affairs director, James Lewis, shared these thoughts: “This is a fundamentally childish attempt to overturn the will of Congress and the American people. President Obama was handedly re-elected and only 39 percent of Americans support repealing the law yet stubborn insanity remains that will shut down the government and hurts millions of Virginians employed in the federal government,” said Lewis.
