VJA congratulates John Pochee on his receipt of the Order of Australia for services to music as a jazz musician. The relevant biographical notes appear below. MEDAL (OAM) OF THE ORDER OF AUSTRALIA IN THE GENERAL DIVISION Mr John Kenneth POCHÉE, Hillsdale NSW 2036 For service to music as a jazz musician. Founder of a number of groups including The Last Straw (1974), Ten Part Invention (1986), The Engine Room (1988) and The Space Cadets (2000). Presenter, Annual Bell Jazz Lecture, 2008. President, Professional Musicians Club, since 2007; Director, since 1987. Member, Australia Council, 1988. Member, Inaugural Committee, Jazz Action Society, 1975-1976. Member, Sydney Improvised Music Association Committee, for 20 years. Member, Jazz Coordination Association of New South Wales, for 15 years. Awards/recognition include: Career Achievement Award, Graeme Bell Hall of Fame, 2006. Best Australian Jazz Record, ARIA Awards, 1990 with Last Straw; and 1993, 1995, 1997 and 2001 with the Bernie McGann Trio. Australian Entertainment MO Awards, 1990, 1996 and 2000. Australian Music Foundation Award, 2000. Australian Music Centre Award, 2000. Australian Jazz Critics Award for Drums, 1990 and 1992. Inductee, Roll of Honour, Montsalvat Jazz Festival, 1996.
