Vale Brian Harradine - truly a great Tasmanian - who passed today. Brian came to politics through the trade union movement but challenging the Labor factions and holding a firm line on communism infiltrating the Labor movement. Brian was a trusted politician because of his life long record of standing up for working people and defending the most vulnerable members of the human family. He became the longest serving member of the Senate, earning the respect of his friends and foes alike. I was privileged to meet Senator Harradine on many occasions, and snuck into the senate chamber to pay respect during his valedictory speech back in around 2005. He was a remarkable man and formidable politician. I can only aspire to the example set by Brian Harradine. My thoughts are with Brians family, who should always be very proud of him and his legacy. Rest in peace.
