Veganism is a growing phenomenon – especially in the United States, where 1/6th of the meat consumed in the world is eaten. 2.5% of Americans are vegan – that is a lot of people, up from 1% from 2009. While its unclear whether veganism is a fad for most of its self-defined practitioners, or whether they’re dedicated to staying vegan, the practice is becoming more widespread especially with the celebrity aspect pulling into the topic. This also means that a lot of Americans are facing a common problem – holiday meals. Especially thanksgiving, which is traditionally observed with a nice pumpkin pie, some mac and cheese and, of course, the turkey. However, the human spirit won’t be put down – even in the search of plant-based recipes, it seems. Democratic Senator Cory Booker, from New Jersey, recently began his vegan journey, and has been tweeting recipes, openly discussing his disturbance with the problems in modern agriculture and the food industry. And, well, thanksgiving. There are surprisingly many options for self-determined herbivores out there who are resisting the turkey and going for other meals. For example – pumpkin pies made entirely from plant-based products, and tofurkey – although I’ll be honest, as a vegan myself, I dislike meat replacement products. Especially tofu. I mean, the stuff isn’t exactly really healthy either, when you consider the mass-production of soy and what phytoestrogens can do to a man. But, there are other options – although they require flexibility. Why not, if you’re in a vegan household or family, completely rid yourself of the old food traditions in favor of creating new ones. Veganism has been on a massive rise the past few years, with only roughly 2% of vegans having been so for over 30 years – the slim majority of vegans had been so for over 10 years, but a whopping 52% have only been vegan for less than a decade – so it is a fairly new and growing trend, and if its a trend your serious of committing to, then perhaps part of the process is coming up with new traditions. Some ideas include a vegan caesar salad with chick peas, sweet potato casserole with nuts, smashed potatoes with an avocado-garlic aioli, shredded kale salads and an assortment of delicious vegan pies and treats. Recipes exist all over the internet, and surprisingly, adapting a vegan recipe to fit your local options isn’t that hard – and going local is a must. As a vegan, part of your responsibility to the planet, if that is why you chose to become vegan, as nearly 70% of vegans decided to stop eating animal products for the animal’s sake, you have to rid yourself of big agriculture. Big agriculture is what is razing land and taking away animal habitats to create massive monocultures sprayed with all sorts of insecticides and herbicides. - See more at: ift.tt/1FuZYSK DatSyn News - Celebrating Thanksgiving And Other Holidays As A Vegan
