✞ Verdi: La Vergine Degli Angeli (The Virgin of the Angels) in Her honour for this first day of advent. ✞ La Vergine degli Angeli, English The Virgin of the Angels is the anthem religious in G major that closes the end of Act II de La forza del destino by Giuseppe Verdi , set in the church of Our Lady of the Angels at Hornachuelos . It is sung first by a male choir, strengthened by the solo voices of the Father Guardian and Melito and accompanied by cellos , and then from Leonora (soprano), accompanied by harp . The hymn is also performed in concert form, sometimes with the entire final II. The first soprano to sing it was Caroline Barbot. Other great sopranos singing it were Teresa Stolz , Antonietta Fricci , Rosa Ponselle , Elisabeth Rethberg , Zinka Milanov , Stella Roman , Renata Tebaldi , Mary Curtis Verna , Leonie Rysanek , Eileen Farrell , Gabriella Tucci , Leontyne Price , Lucine Amara , Martina Arroyo and Leona Mitchell . La forza del destino;(The Power of Fate, often translated The Force of Destiny) is an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on a Spanish drama, Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino (1835), by Ángel de Saavedra, 3rd Duke of Rivas, with a scene adapted from Friedrich Schillers Wallensteins Lager. It was first performed in the Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre of Saint Petersburg, Russia, on 22 November [O.S. 10 November] 1862. La forza del destino is frequently performed, and there have been a number of complete recordings. In addition, the overture (to the revised version of the opera) is part of the standard repertoire for orchestras, often played as the opening piece at concerts. Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (9 or 10 October 1813 – 27 January 1901) was an Italian Romantic composer primarily known for his operas. He is considered, together with Richard Wagner, the preeminent opera composer of the nineteenth century. Verdi dominated the Italian opera scene after the eras of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture, as La donna è mobile from Rigoletto, Libiamo ne lieti calici (The Drinking Song) from La traviata, Va, pensiero (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, the Coro di zingari (Anvil Chorus) from Il trovatore and the Grand March from Aida. Moved by the death of compatriot Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi wrote Messa da Requiem in 1874 in Manzonis honour, a work now regarded as a masterpiece of the oratorio tradition and a testimony to his capacity outside the field of opera. Visionary and politically engaged, he remains – alongside Garibaldi and Cavour – an emblematic figure of the reunification process of the Italian peninsula (the Risorgimento).
