Very few people know about my hearing loss. As a matter of fact, I didnt discover this until I was applying to graduate school at UT. I was thirty-one years old, and you can imagine my astonishment when they questioned me about my significant hearing loss. Evidently I had had this congenital condition my entire life and had learned to adapt pretty well. Hearing low frequency and high frequency sounds are no problem, but conversations? That is an entirely different matter. Chances are most of our telephone conversation leaves me in the dark. If I cant see you, I cant understand you. If you whisper to me in a crowded room with your mouth close to my ear, forget about it. I wont understand a word you say. I an tell that my hearing is getting worse, which worries me. Back in 1997 when I first learned of this, I was told that hearing aids would not help. It seems that new technology makes this untrue today; however hearing aids for this condition are highly specialized and expensive but definitely something I want to explore.
