Very good commentary in TODAY. I especially agree with this point - weve grafted too many things on a system which was originally just for retirement. So we have housing, more housing, health, investments, education and gawd knows what... all such that we now do NOT have enough for retirement. And no point saying we can always sell our homes because werent we conditioned to be proud home-owners? This grafting of many objectives on something that started off as perfectly sound is a sort of infection we have... So we go back to the basics of public housing...that there must be supply and it must be affordable. Weve now come to think that public transport should be public coz private sector profit motive (even if bottomlines drive efficiency and should lead to lower cost) doesnt make it a BETTER public good. We should think the same about healthcare: and why there are beds along corridors at the same time as public hospitals attempt to attract paying medical tourists. I worry about education - because its supposed to root out all evil and wrong in society! So many changes and add-ons, u cant catch your breath. Its gonna look like a many-headed Hydra But I also pity the G on some of the above. If it sticks to its guns, people will say not responsive; but if changes come back to bite us, we say its weak and have lousy civil servants who cant plan long-term.
