Very happy to have found this, the smallest and likely the rarest of our local species during our outing to Beltsville, MD. This is a Little Brown or Ground Skink (Scincella lateralis) and we are near the edge of its range. It was about to lose its tail (which never starts off blue like our other native skinks) which is why it was twitching it. The best field mark is likely the dark racing stripe along its side. This my first ever, and I know there was some question whether or not this one was still found locally by some people. A very cool find for me personally.
