Very sad to hear the news last night that writer Sue Townsend has died. Generous to a fault, Sue was a patron of Leicesters Everybodys Reading festival. Her series of Adian Mole books brought laughter to the bleak background of Thatcherite Britain. A lifelong socialist and republican Sue was also a an unrepentant risk taker. Her novel The Queen and I, which placed a deposed royal family in a council house on Leicesters Saffron Lane Estate, was a joy for its gentle wit and debunking of privilege. Sue Townsend will be much missed by the ordinary people of Leicester, for whom, in essence, she wrote. Condolences to Sean and the family. RIP.
