Veterans Day Evening 2014. Here is a big wish and prayer that everyone who reads this had a safe and happy Veterans Day. Kathy M. Alvarez, I seem to remember that your Father was in the Army ? or was it this Air Force? at any rate I thank you for his service. Someone sent me a note on F/B asking what the first crazy thing I did that I remember was. That is easy, about 7 to 10 days after the Whale incident, we were called out to a sinking boat that was also on fire. To make it short, I got the fire out but the boat sunk from under me and the survivors. Getting the survivors to the motor lifeboat was easy enough, however due to fairly heavy wave action--12 to 15 footers, the boat crew was too sea sick and weakened to pull the survivors on to the MLB. With this problem at hand, I solved it by grabbing the boats whale deck gunnel--the side of the boat where the aft survivors compartment was and the deck was also lower, and then I swung my hips and legs under the MLB and rested my feet on the starboard propeller shaft about 6 inches from the propeller, which was turning. This made a very good, steady platform for the survivors to grab on to, climb on to and then be pulled on to the MLB. To me this was not very crazy and it got the job done as everyone involved went home safely, just a wee bit wet and cold! By the way, this is the first time that I have publicly told this. And no I never informed anyone on USCG Station Yaquinna Bay as they would have put me on the beach for lack of personal safety--oh well it DID get the job done.
