Via our Friends at EarthScope and UNAVCO: Did you know that the force of gravity varies from place to place on the Earths surface? Measuring these differences can tell us about whats going on deep within the Earth. This recently published study illuminates the dynamics of Earths mantle--where plates are descending down into it, and where hot plumes are welling up through it. [These] maps highlight north–south-elongated gravity gradient anomalies over Asia and America that follow a belt of ancient subduction boundaries, as well as gravity gradient anomalies over the central Pacific Ocean and south of Africa that coincide with the locations of deep mantle plumes.
