Villa 1-0 Southampton – HT: Gabby Agbonlahor toasted Villa’s 140th birthday by giving his boyhood club a first-half lead against Southampton. The stand-in skipper showed lightning reflexes to beat Fraser Forster to Ciaran Clark’s long ball before keeping his cool to slot into an empty net. The 29th-minute strike was one of few clear-cut opportunities in an extremely cagey first period at Villa Park. In the early stages, Brad Guzan was alert to tip over Nathaniel Clyne’s awkward right-wing cross. And the American keeper was called into action again later in the half to push Sadio Mane’s shot around the post.
