Violence and Racist America But riots... Really? You do remember that the black folks who were kidnapped and taken here to the US to make rich white people rich were murdered, raped, mutilated, tortured? You do remember that the discrimination against them was so terrible it took the US army after the civil war to maintain a degree of civility that ended almost immediately after they were removed by President Hayes in some bullshit political shenanigans? You do remember that a black person will make less, have a greater chance of being incarcerated, will have less access to quality education. You do remember this has been going on for hundreds of years, right? That this system has been in place for hundreds of years. So, if you give a shit about your humanity; if you care in the least about sharing love and seeing your fellow human being as a person i.e. being a compassionate person, then remember the above facts about our country and also that people who are organizing on the ground against white supremacy and institutionalized racism are NOT organizing riots or violence. They are not organizing looters and criminals. The movement that is being built right now is a movement for justice. It is a movement to save our humanity! It looks like there are a lot of people out in the world who have decided to double down on their defense of Mike Browns murder. These are people who are in agreement with the things above I suggested needed remembering. If they want to use a riot to justify their inhuman behavior then that is their choice. Riots happen. Here is an example of some riots officialfrenchtoast.tumblr/post/103554355670 also more here: https://storify/betakateenin/white-people-riots There was a riot at a pumpkin festival. A riot after the SF Giants won the World Series. Now there is a riot in response to the verdict. Ok. I dont agree with it myself, but it doesnt take anything away from the work that people are trying to do. Good work. Work to make this country a better place for everyone who lives here. Be it property damage or civil disobedience, the response on the ground is peripheral to the issue at hand. It is a technique to force attention to a subject that has to be dealt with. That subject is the deeply offensive and deadly racism that permeates our society. It can not be turned away from. At least not right now. If we are to move past it we need to meet it head on by discussing the effects of discrimination and what we can do to take practical steps to rectify our mistakes. To focus on the violence in the streets is to take away focus from the system that made it inevitable. It is our responsibility to be that clear sighted.
