Virginia, Alaska and Alabama are the states that have been most hurt by the ongoing federal government shutdown, according to a new study. The study, conducted by personal finance website WalletHub, gauged which states had the largest amounts of workers affected by the flow of government money being turned off. Virginia and Alaska were particularly hurt by the Oct. 1 shutdown due to the large amounts of federal workers in these states. RELATED: NOBODY WINNING IN SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN AS DEBT WOES LOOM But the report also took into account “the areas in which there are large populations of people who have lost or are at risk of losing key funding from federal entities, such as students, small business owners, senior citizens, and veterans.” As a result, Alabama, the third-most affected state, “should be particularly concerned about a prolonged shutdown” because its senior citizens per capita ranks among the highest, the study’s authors found. “With the federal government shutdown entering its second week and no resolution in sight, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that the impact of this forced hiatus will extend far beyond the 800,000 federal workers who are currently on furlough,” WalletHub CEO Odysseas Papadimitriou said.
