Virre (Estonia) Actually there are two kinds of Virre. At first there was just Virre: Virre is a four-member acoustic band, majoring in lively traditional dance tunes, with occasional pieces more tranquil and lyrical. ”Virre“ combines traditional Estonian violin music with improvisational skills, adding tunes originally performed on other instruments, as well as arrangements of folk songs. “Virre” represents the stylistic diversity of Estonian folk music – amusing and entertaining, melancholy, optimistic – making use of the violin, viola, guitar and tambourines. Better a bow in hand than fiddler on the roof! And then there came Virre Plus. Virre+ is an experimental rhythm’n’feeling group, playing the violin, viola, bagpipe, fifes, Jew’s harp, guitar, bass, percussions and at times other instruments, in music of their own and in arrangements of traditional music. Traditional „Virre”, one of the oldest professional folkgroups in Estonia, has grown into „Virre+”. The fiddlers have both symphony orchestra and traditional music backgrounds and that’s what You will hear in their music. The main aspect to differentiate Virre+ from the other professional Estonian folkbands is a wider sound. Pleasurable, entertaining and rocking hard!
