Virtual reality is becoming increasingly pervasive in our society. Digital worlds like Second Life give users a place to engage, via avatar, in ways real life does not allow. According to Dr. Phillip Freeman, a Boston psychiatrist who came upon the avatar of a real life psychoanalyst, the analyst noted that his virtual patients shared real life emotion under the guise of virtual reality. The ability to click an X gave his patients security and anonymity, which allowed them, they felt, to begin to open up about their lived, not virtual, reality.
